Our verdict

7.5/10

  • Difficulty: Medium
  • Players: 1
  • Playtime: 2–4 h

Creepy Tale is a short 2D puzzle-platformer drawn like a grim old fairy tale. A walk in the woods goes wrong, your brother is taken, and you push through a forest of witches and monsters by solving scene puzzles, hiding and slipping past enemies. It suits solo players who liked Limbo-style dark side-scrollers and want an evening-sized game.

Steam reviews are very positive (377 of 477). Players love the hand-painted, brown-toned art and the eerie soundtrack, and several call it a fair deal for its low price. The puzzles are described as unique and mostly straightforward, mixed with stealth and chase sections. Deaths are frequent and a little gory despite the cute look.

The main complaint is the puzzles themselves: some players could not tell which objects were interactive and fell back on hints or trial and error. Expect about three hours. If you like dark fairy tales and do not mind some guesswork, it is an easy recommendation, and a good start before the sequels.

Pros

  • Hand-painted Brothers Grimm style forest with an eerie soundtrack
  • Mix of scene puzzles, hiding and chase sections
  • Low price for a tight few hours

Cons

  • Unclear interactive objects lead to trial and error
  • Frequent, slightly gory deaths
  • Short at around three hours

Creepy Tale is a mysterious puzzle-platformer crafted in a minimalist style, inspired by old, grim fairy tales where children found themselves in eerie places—and only a few lucky ones ever made it back.

STORY

While walking with your brother, everything turns into horror and drags the hero into a series of terrible events. Your brother has been kidnapped, and you are left face-to-face with an ominous forest filled with dangers and strange creatures. Solve the puzzles that you meet on the way, do not let yourself be caught, and save your brother!

Find out the dark story that befell the once-calm and peaceful forest, turning it into a creepy place filled with evil. Perhaps it is you who will be able to solve all the secrets of the forest and save the peaceful creatures?

  • A puzzle-platformer in the spirit of Limbo.

  • Features of a classic adventure: collect items for your inventory and use them in a variety of situations.

  • But this is not only a quest, you will have to hide, run away, jump high, and even ... learn to play the reedpipe!

  • A truly creepy soundtrack and beautiful 2D art will take you to a dark tale and give you few unforgettable hours!
