Sam & Dan: Floaty Flatmates is a free two-player VR co-op game set after a great flood. Each of you is stuck in a separate apartment on opposite sides of a flooded street, with a large shark circling below, and you have to scavenge supplies, rig up ways to communicate such as a tin-can phone, and build a bridge to reach a boat. There is also a short competitive mode where you race to build a bridge and shoot arrows at each other. It suits two friends who both own VR headsets and want a quick, silly session.
With 570 reviews at about 93% positive, players clearly enjoy it. Reviewers describe it as a short, funny teamwork puzzle where clumsy mistakes are part of the joke, and several recommend going in blind. Hidden easter eggs give a reason to poke around after the ending.
The caveats are length and controls. Most pairs finish in 20 to 60 minutes, movement is slow and tied to controller direction, and a few hit frame drops or connection trouble. The public player base is gone, so bring your own partner. Since it costs nothing, it is an easy recommendation for VR friends; solo players can skip it.
Pros
- Completely free, with only an optional cosmetic DLC
- Split-apartment setup forces real communication between partners
- Silly physics and a circling shark keep failures funny
Cons
- Over in under an hour for most pairs
- Slow, awkward movement and turning
- Needs a friend with VR; matchmaking is effectively empty
About
Sam & Dan: Floaty Flatmates is a co-op VR game where communication and teamwork is key. You are playing as Sam or Dan, one of the two survivors trapped in your apartment because of a major world flood. Your buddy is trapped in a different building across the street, work together to get supplies to build a bridge towards a boat. Find tools to make communication easier, like a tin can, that can be used as a can phone. Also avoid falling in the water, there’s a big shark!
