Shift at Midnight is a co-op horror game for one to three players set in a rural gas station in 1993. You stock shelves, take deliveries and serve customers, but some of them are doppelgangers. You check each ID against the computer and watch how they act; miss one and it comes back later as a monster, so you barricade the doors, set traps and hide. Solo play exists, but it is built for groups with proximity chat.
Players describe it as Papers, Please meets a retail job, more goofy than scary. They praise the detective part, the jumpscares early on and how funny it gets with friends. The 13-shift story mode is randomly generated, and most groups finished it in one sitting of four to five hours.
The common complaints: once you get a pistol the monsters are easy to deal with and the horror fades, the stocking side is filler, and some players report frame drops and lag. Content is thin for now, with a free Endless Mode planned for late 2026. At a low price it is an easy pick for a group game night; solo players can skip it.
Pros
- Checking customer IDs and behaviour for doppelgangers is tense with friends
- Randomly generated shifts, so no two runs are the same
- Proximity chat makes the chaos funny
Cons
- Monsters become easy once you have a gun, so the horror wears off
- Little content after the 13-shift story; Endless Mode is still to come
- Some players report frame drops and online lag
About
Managing a gas station is tough work, keep your stock shelves full and sell enough products to meet your quota each night, take deliveries and keep your store nice and clean.
Oh, and make sure to interrogate each customer as you serve - as some are not human and are in fact doppelgangers – miss one and they will return later that shift to try and kill you and your friends… Execute on site if you think they are not human – just be sure to clean up after.
If you mess up, be prepared to set traps, barricade the doors and hide as the doppelgangers return as horrible monsters.
Manage your gas station
Stock the shelves, take deliveries, keep your store clean & serve customers. Each shift is randomly generated… meaning no 2 shifts are the same.
Not all customers are human…
Managing a gas station these days also means you have to be a detective… examine their ID, cross-check their details in the computer, and observe their behaviour. Make sure they are human before you let them leave, or they will come back…
Board Up, Lay Traps and Hide
If a creature manages to leave the store, all hell breaks loose. Barricade the doors, place traps, and find a place to hide. Survival is no longer guaranteed.
Better with friends!
Multiplayer is where the game thrives, work together or at least be together… proximity chat enhances the experience.
