The Gleam: VR Escape the Room is a tiny, VR-only horror escape room and the first of Blue Entropy Studios' room-scale series. You are shut in a cramped, dingy space and must find keys and codes to get out, crawling through vents and reusing the same small area as it changes around you, with no teleporting. It is really only for VR owners curious about the studio's roots or picking it up in a bundle.
Players give it some credit for the claustrophobic mood, the clever reuse of a small play space and the fun of crawling through a tunnel; a few were thoroughly scared. Most reviewers, though, say there are almost no real puzzles: keys sit in plain sight and the run is a short treasure hunt punctuated by jump scares and a strobing light that some found more irritating than frightening.
It is over in five to fifteen minutes, and players report items falling through the floor, lost flashlights, clipping and restarts. Reviews are Mostly Negative. Several suggest the studio's later game, The Cabin, as the better choice. Skip it unless it comes almost free in a bundle.
Pros
- Claustrophobic room-scale space with vents to crawl through
- Clever reuse of a small play area as the room changes
Cons
- Five to fifteen minutes long with hardly any real puzzles
- Items fall through the floor, forcing restarts
- Jump scares and strobe lighting annoy more than they scare
