Unsolved Case
Our verdict
8/10

Unsolved Case is a free, short prequel to Eleven Puzzles' Cryptic Killer series of co-op point-and-click games. Two detectives, Old Dog and Ally, chase a possible copycat of the Cryptic Killer through rooms full of codes and riddles. Each player sees different clues and needs their own copy, a connection and voice chat. Cross-platform play links PC, Mac, phone and tablet. It suits pairs who want a quick taste before buying the full games.
Players enjoy the comic-book art and say the puzzles split information well between the two screens. Most rate the difficulty as fair or a little easy, though a few admit to brute-forcing parts. Many treat it as a good sampler for the paid Cryptic Killer games. Most pairs finish in forty minutes to an hour.
The main complaints are length and polish: you have to click through the same tutorial screens every time you join a game, and cutscenes and transitions can't be skipped. Some find it over too fast. Since it costs nothing, it is an easy pick for any co-op pair, especially if one of you plays on a Mac or phone.
Pros
- Free and cross-platform across PC, Mac, phone and tablet
- Each detective's screen holds clues the other needs
- Comic-book art and a good sampler for the Cryptic Killer series
Cons
- Over in about forty minutes to an hour
- Unskippable tutorial screens and transitions every session
