Our verdict
7/10
- Difficulty: Hard
- Players: 1
- Playtime: 1–2 h
20 Trials to Heaven is a free, single-player trap gauntlet set in Purgatory: a lost soul walks through twenty rooms in a row, with one life, no checkpoints and only the four arrow keys. A timer ranks each run. It is less an escape room than a memorisation challenge, and it suits players who enjoy learning a route by dying on it.
The evidence is thin, with seven Steam reviews, six of them positive. Those players describe it as easy to pick up and very hard to finish, and more than one admits to stalling around room five or rage-quitting in the early levels. The satisfaction comes from finally clearing a room you have failed many times.
The main complaint is the design itself: one reviewer found that restarting from room one after a single hit felt tedious rather than hard. If that loop sounds frustrating, skip it. Since it costs nothing and a session takes about an hour, it is an easy try for fans of punishing reflex puzzles.
Pros
- Free, with simple arrow-key controls anyone can learn
- Twenty trap rooms reward memorising each route
- Timer and rank give a reason to replay for a faster run
Cons
- One hit sends you back to room one, which some find tedious
- More a reflex gauntlet than an escape room puzzle game
About
A lost soul awakens in Purgatory, facing twenty trials before final judgment. Each room is a lesson. Avoid its traps. Learn from every death. The path is simple. Reaching the end is not.
NOT FEATURING
A giant open world? Just a simple path from A to B. And perhaps a few secrets... please don’t tell anyone.
Multiple difficulty settings? One difficulty. One life per attempt. Zero checkpoints.
Complicated controls and endless button combinations? Just Up, Down, Left, and Right.
No reason to hurry? There is a timer... You’ll get the rank you deserve.
200 hours of gameplay? Only if you're a slow learner.
Multiplayer? No. Wrong Steam page.
