Our verdict

8.5/10

  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Players: 1
  • Playtime: 4–6 h

Agent A: A Puzzle in Disguise is a point-and-click escape room game with a 1960s spy look. You sneak through the hideout of enemy spy Ruby La Rouge, picking locks, hacking gadgets, playing the piano and feeding her cat. It has around 100 inventory puzzles spread over 35 locations. It suits solo players who want a light, funny puzzle game for a few evenings.

Steam reviews are overwhelmingly positive (2,071 of 2,179). Players praise the mid-century art, the humour and puzzles that mostly make sense, with no way to get stuck in an unwinnable state. Several say it starts as a single escape room and later opens up into a Myst-like set of linked locations.

Recurring complaints: backtracking in the last chapter gets tedious, scene transitions are slow and many puzzles are straightforward. Most players finish in four to six hours, and a few felt that was short for the price. It is widely recommended, especially on sale.

Pros

  • 1960s spy style with gadgets, hidden switches and humour
  • Around 100 inventory puzzles with no unwinnable states
  • Opens up from one room into a Myst-like set of linked areas

Cons

  • Lots of backtracking in the final chapter
  • Slow transitions between scenes
  • Short and mostly easy for the full price
