The Missing Detective is the first case in the Dean Archer Stories anthology: a small noir point-and-click escape room. You arrive for a job interview with private detective Dean Archer, find his office empty and locked from the inside, and piece together what he left behind using the objects in the room and a built-in notebook. It suits point-and-click fans who want a cheap, atmospheric single sitting.
All seven Steam reviewers recommend it. Players compare it to a compact, Myst-like room and enjoy the rainy, gas-lit noir mood. They describe a mix of puzzles: some obvious, a few genuine head-scratchers, and one reviewer warns of hard-to-spot hotspots and a couple of solutions close to moon logic, so clicking everywhere pays off.
The main limit is length. Most reviewers finished in well under two hours, and the story ends where the next volume is meant to pick up. At around a dollar it is an easy recommendation for noir and escape-room fans; skip it if you want a complete mystery rather than a first chapter.
Pros
- Rain, gas lamps and saxophone give the office a strong noir mood
- Built-in notebook tracks clues and evidence for you
- Very low price for a polished single-room mystery
Cons
- Most players finished in under an hour or so
- A few hidden hotspots and near moon-logic solutions
- Story is only the opening case of a series
