Escape from Mutation Station is a one-room escape game from solo developer Jay Marksman that slowly reveals itself to be something stranger. You play a test subject locked in an evaluation room, poking around in first person and feeding answers into an old computer terminal. It suits players who like a short, odd puzzle box they can finish in one evening.
The small player base is almost unanimous in its praise: around 70 of 72 reviews are positive. Players mention being caught off guard more than once, and say the game turns into much more than its plain setup suggests. Steam tags lean towards surreal, psychological horror and logic puzzles rather than jump scares.
The main limit is size. Most players are done in under two hours, and once the twists are known there is little reason to go back. At under four dollars that is a fair trade. Pick it up if you enjoy mind games and meta surprises; skip it if you want a long chain of rooms or co-op.
Pros
- Plain test-room setup hides several genuine surprises
- Terminal-based puzzles tie the clues and story together
- Tight one-sitting length at a low price
Cons
- Over in under two hours with little replay value
- Single-player only, one room
