Our verdict
8/10
- Difficulty: Medium
- Players: 1
- Playtime: 2–3 h
Her Story is Sam Barlow's FMV mystery set at an old police computer. A woman was interviewed seven times in 1994 about her missing husband, and the footage is cut into hundreds of short clips. You type search words, watch the clips where she says them and piece together what happened. It suits solo players who like non-linear detective stories and true-crime puzzles more than classic room escapes.
Players rate it Very Positive, with about 88 percent of over six thousand reviews in favour. Reviewers praise Viva Seifert's performance and how the search mechanic itself becomes the storytelling: each new term opens another thread. Several say the plot twists land well and that you can keep digging for missed clips after you feel you are done.
The caveats are clear in the negative reviews. The game is short, has almost no tools for taking notes or organising searches, and the ending is deliberately open, which leaves some players unsatisfied. A few found the link between words and clips arbitrary. It is worth it for fans of Telling Lies or Immortality, especially on sale; skip it if you want explicit puzzles with a solved ending.
Pros
- Typing search words into a police video database is a fresh mechanic
- Strong live-action performance carries the whole mystery
- Non-linear clips reward you for chasing every lead
Cons
- Short, with an open ending some players find unsatisfying
- No built-in notes or tools to organise your searches
- Some reviewers found the word-to-clip links arbitrary
About
A Video Game About a Woman Talking to the Police
Her Story is the award winning video game from Sam Barlow, creator of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories and Aisle. A crime fiction game with non-linear storytelling, Her Story revolves around a police database full of live action video footage. It stars Viva Seifert, actress and one half of the band Joe Gideon and the Shark. How does it work?
Her Story sits you in front of a mothballed desktop computer that’s logged into a police database of video footage. The footage covers seven interviews from 1994 in which a British woman is interviewed about her missing husband. Explore the database by typing search terms, watch the clips where she speaks those words and piece together her story.
Unlike anything you've played before, Her Story is an involving and moving experience. A game that asks you to listen.
