Our verdict

7/10

  • Difficulty: Hard
  • Players: 1
  • Playtime: 3–6 h

Lighthouse of Madness is a first-person puzzle adventure that mixes escape room design with H.P. Lovecraft. As lighthouse engineer Dorian Cannon you arrive on Darenne Island near Innsmouth to rescue the keepers, and find an abandoned mine, a towering lighthouse and a lot of notes about the island's dark past. It suits solo players who like Myst-style puzzles with a horror mood.

With 20 Steam reviews, 19 positive, the evidence is limited. Players praise the Lovecraftian atmosphere, the level design and puzzles that range from environmental discoveries to logic challenges; one compares the hardest ones to Myst or Quern, though not quite as tough. Optional collectible puzzles add extra challenge, and one reviewer enjoyed cracking codes with friends over a voice call.

The one negative review got lost for an hour without knowing what to do and disliked a sudoku collectible in a horror game. A few call it rough around the edges. Expect a few hours. If you want a challenging, spooky puzzle island, it is worth a look.

Pros

  • Lovecraftian island with a lighthouse and abandoned mine to explore
  • Varied puzzles from environmental clues to logic challenges
  • Optional collectible puzzles for extra challenge

Cons

  • Only 20 reviews so far
  • Easy to lose direction early on
  • Rough around the edges
