Our verdict

8/10

  • Difficulty: Medium
  • Players: 1
  • Playtime: 4–6 h

Retropolis 2: Never Say Goodbye is a VR point-and-click adventure from Peanut Button. You play robot detective Philip Log, searching a neon-lit city of robots for the femme fatale Jenny Montage, and you grab and use items from a distance with extendable arms. Play is seated and stationary, so it suits VR newcomers and fans of 1990s-style adventure games. It stands on its own, though it follows The Secret of Retropolis.

All but 2 of its 38 Steam reviews are positive. Players praise the stylish hand-drawn noir look, the humour, the voice acting and music, and puzzles that span several rooms while staying logical. Many call it a clear step up from the first game: longer, with four episodes of roughly an hour each, including a police station.

Criticisms are minor but recurring. Some found later episodes slip into pixel hunts and far-fetched solutions, a few disliked the lead's voice, and the story ends on a cliffhanger. Early players saw the character's own eyes floating in view. A built-in walkthrough helps if you get stuck. Recommended for VR adventure fans, especially on sale.

Pros

  • Robot noir city with a stylish hand-drawn look and good humour
  • Extendo-arms make seated VR point-and-click comfortable
  • Longer than the first game, with puzzles spread over several rooms

Cons

  • Later episodes lean on pixel hunts and far-fetched solutions
  • Story ends on a cliffhanger
  • Full price is steep for its length

About

Immerse yourself in the shadows, where danger lurks and every step leads you further to the edge of madness. Navigate the neon-lit streets as robo-detective Philip Log and search for Jenny Montage, the automated femme fatale, in this gritty post-apocalyptic saga. Retropolis 2: Never Say Goodbye brings you a whole new epic standalone tale to unfold. Solve sinister mysteries using your extendo-arms, and unravel the secrets of the city of robots. .

The story of Retropolis 2: Never Say Goodbye is set a year after the events depicted in The Secret of Retropolis, and continues the story of Philip Log, the hard-boiled robo-detective, and Jenny Montage, the automated femme fatale that just can’t keep herself out of trouble.

Retropolis 2: Never Say Goodbye welcomes new visitors to the city of robots, and can be experienced as its own self contained adventure .

The Retropolis series is a user-friendly VR experience built from the ground up to support effortless VR interaction. Using Philip Log’s extendo-arms, the player is able to collect items from afar, use them to overcome obstacles, and move the plot forward. On top of the first game’s mechanics, Retropolis 2: Never Say Goodbye features enchanted logic puzzles, new rotation mechanics, and movement between different environments, offering a more challenging adventure with a substantially longer playtime.

Even though set in a post-apocalyptic cityscape inhabited only by robots, all 3D assets in Retropolis 2: Never Say Goodbye were hand painted by living and breathing human beings, making each environment a stunningly detailed piece of art. With improved graphics and character animation, returning to Retropolis is more jaw dropping than ever. Immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of the city and search for hidden jokes.

Retropolis 2: Never Say Goodbye was written and directed with the belief that VR games will be the basis of entertainment in the 21st century. We see no difference between cinema, anime, and gaming. Our mission is to blend them all together and shape the future of narrative driven games.
