Sherlock Holmes: The Devil's Daughter is Frogwares' 2016 detective adventure. You play Holmes across five cases in Victorian London, examining crime scenes, profiling suspects and linking clues on a deduction board where your conclusions decide how each case ends. It suits solo players who like detective stories with logic puzzles mixed in.
Steam reception is mostly positive, with about 78 percent of 3,700 reviews recommending it. Players like the deduction and profiling systems, which carry over from Crimes and Punishments, and several single out the first and last cases as highlights. The common complaint is the extra action: chases, tailing suspects as Wiggins, eavesdropping and quick-time events that many say pad the game out. Fans of the previous game also miss its writing and the old voices for Holmes and Watson.
Expect around ten to twelve hours. A few reviewers ran into sparse checkpoints, confusing sections and keyboard-and-mouse problems. At its current low price it is good value for detective fans, but if you mainly want pure deduction, Crimes and Punishments is the better entry.
Pros
- Deduction board and suspect profiling reward careful reasoning
- Five separate cases, with strong opening and final cases
- Around ten hours of content for a low price
Cons
- Action minigames and quick-time events feel like padding
- Writing and voice cast considered weaker than Crimes and Punishments
- Some reports of sparse checkpoints and input problems
