The Castle of Dr. Hoot is a short horror puzzle adventure dressed up as 90s educational software. You explore the castle of spelling expert Dr. Hoot, with a classroom, a lab, a library and a detention dungeon, solving spelling challenges and logic riddles, earning Extra Credit Points for the school store and watching your Grade Score while avoiding breaking the rules. It suits solo players who enjoy creepy childhood nostalgia, such as fans of Endacopia.
Steam reviews are very positive (about 80% of 76). Players love the cute art, the Castlevania-like music and how it turns Reader Rabbit-style learning games into something sinister. Several were surprised by where it goes, and later patches fixed early bugs, with no soft-locks reported since.
Some found it confusing at first and then quite easy, and one reviewer found the gameplay loop frustrating despite loving the style. It is short, about one to two hours by the developer's own count, and cheap. If the premise appeals, it is an easy evening pick.
Pros
- Spelling challenges and logic riddles with a sinister twist
- Convincing 90s edutainment look and catchy music
- School store and Grade Score add light structure
Cons
- Confusing start, then fairly easy
- Some players find the gameplay loop frustrating
- Very short at one to two hours
