The Incident at Galley House
Our verdict
9/10
- Difficulty: Medium
- Players: 1
- Playtime: 8–15 h
The Incident at Galley House is a deduction game from the team behind The Roottrees Are Dead, remastering the browser game Type Help. In 1936 a group of people died in a lonely house, and you use a strange machine that replays echoes of the past to find scenes by working out when and where they happened, then identify who everyone is and how they died. It suits solo players who loved Return of the Obra Dinn or Roottrees.
Around 97% of more than 2,600 Steam reviews are positive. Players praise the strong voice acting, the illustrated scenes and a plot that keeps overturning first impressions; several took handwritten notes or played for hours without a break. Most finish in about 8 to 15 hours, and reviewers say it is creepy but has no jump scares.
The main criticism is the middle: once you know who is dying and why, some felt the rest turned into hunting for the next scene code rather than real deduction. A few also found the game too forgiving of guesses, or the ending abrupt. Mystery fans should buy it; if story reveals matter less to you than tight logic, wait for a sale.
Pros
- Echo machine turns finding scenes in time into the core puzzle
- Excellent voice acting and illustrated scenes
- Plot keeps overturning what you thought you knew
Cons
- Second half can feel like code-hunting more than deduction
- Forgiving of wrong guesses, so solves can feel unearned
About
On Sunday the 7th of March, 1936, a group of locals made their way up the long, muddy track to Galley House. As far as any of them knew, the house had stood empty for decades.
Inside, they discovered the bloody aftermath of something horrific.
The authorities were summoned, and the crime scene was eventually cleared away. But nobody ever figured out what happened that dreadful night. It seemed likely that no one ever would.
Now, many years later, you have access to a peculiar machine — one that lets you listen in on echoes of the past. Can you piece together the events behind The Incident at Galley House?
