Our verdict

7.5/10

  • Difficulty: Hard
  • Players: 1
  • Playtime: 5–10 h

CaseCracker is a text-based detective game with no graphics to speak of. You search a large case database with keywords, cross-reference receipts, item descriptions, crime-scene notes and interrogation transcripts, and follow each clue to the next lead. The cases stand alone but are tied together by a hidden thread. It suits solo players who enjoy reading closely and doing their own deduction, in the vein of Her Story-style search games.

Written reviews are scarce. Steam shows 128 reviews, about 82 percent positive, but only two written reviews are available here. SteamSpy tags lean on Text-Based, Detective, Puzzle and Psychological Horror. One fan praises how it makes you notice small details in the evidence. A hint system exists, but it costs Detective Points.

The negative review gives useful caveats: the many Chinese names are hard for Western players to keep straight, and later cases pile up and overlap until it gets confusing. Some achievements are also very obscure. Given the low price, it is worth a try if you like dense paper-trail puzzles. If you want visuals or a clear story, skip it.

Pros

  • Keyword searches through a case database drive every new lead
  • Cases link through a hidden thread across the whole game
  • Very low price for a dense deduction game

Cons

  • Many similar names are hard to track for some players
  • Later cases tangle together and can get confusing

Unravel the Threads, Expose the Truth

As a test subject, you will experience an incredibly realistic investigative process under the system's strict rules. From a simple takeout receipt or a brief item description, to a full crime scene analysis and interrogation transcripts... every seemingly insignificant fragment could be the critical clue that makes or breaks your case.

Immersive Fragmented Deduction System

Carefully read and sift through a massive database of information, using precise keyword searches to trigger new leads. Utilize the built-in clue categorization and notepad features to piece together fragmented data and reconstruct the sequence of events.

An Interlocking Web of Clues

Clues are progressive and deeply interconnected. Want to track down "Delivery Info"? You'll need to uncover the shipping label number first. Need to request a "Search Warrant"? You must extract the core motive from a sea of data. Stuck at a dead end? You can request a hint from the system, but it will cost you Detective Points. Investigate thoroughly, uncover the facts, and find your own key to cracking the case!

Key Features

Active Deduction: Forget passive reading. Rely entirely on your own proactive database searches to piece together the truth!
In-Depth Case Review: Unlock the official case breakdown after closing a file so you can fully grasp every logical detail.
Shared Universe: While each case operates independently, they are all tightly woven together by a single hidden thread!
