Detective Instinct: Farewell, My Beloved is a detective visual novel in the style of classic Japanese adventure games. A woman disappears on a cross-country train and nobody on board remembers she existed, except you. You investigate by picking commands from a menu and questioning passengers. It suits solo players who like Hotel Dusk or Ace Attorney and care more about characters than hard puzzles.
Steam reviews are very positive (350 of 361). Players love the cast, the pixel-art portraits over pre-rendered backgrounds and especially the soundtrack. Each chapter focuses on a few passengers while slowly building the larger mystery. Reviewers agree it plays more like a visual novel than a puzzle game.
The caveats come from fans of hard mysteries: several say the deduction and puzzles are simple, some twists are easy to see coming and the game can be slow and over-explain things. It takes around five hours. If you want a charming, well-scored train mystery it is a good buy; if you want a tough case to crack, wait for a sale.
Pros
- Train setting where a passenger vanishes and nobody remembers her
- Pixel portraits on pre-rendered 3D backgrounds, with a strong soundtrack
- Large cast with lots of optional dialogue
Cons
- Simple deductions; mystery fans may see twists coming
- Can be slow and over-explain things
- Around five hours for $19.99
