Our verdict

8/10

  • Difficulty: Medium
  • Players: 1–8
  • Playtime: 8–12 h

Escape Simulator 2 is Pine Studio's sequel to its popular first-person escape room game, playable solo or with up to eight friends online, and in VR. It launches with three themed packs of four rooms each: Dracula's Castle, the stranded Starship EOS and a pirate Cursed Treasure island. Almost everything is physical, so you pick up, wipe and move objects, and a Room Editor 2.0 plus Steam Workshop add a steady stream of community rooms. It suits escape room fans, especially groups who want a co-op puzzle night.

Players rate it Very Positive, with about 92 percent of over two thousand reviews in favour. Most returning players call the official rooms richer, better looking and more complex than the first game's, and co-op groups praise rooms built so each player sees different clues. The pirate pack earns special mention for puzzles you can split across a team.

The complaints are real, though. Several reviewers found some puzzles convoluted or maths-heavy and the hints not very helpful, controller support is poor, a few hit multiplayer disconnects, and community rooms vary a lot in quality. Some also wanted more rooms in the base game before paid DLC. Buy it for group play; solo players who dislike obscure logic puzzles may prefer the first game.

Pros

  • Online co-op for up to 8, with rooms that split clues between players
  • Dracula, starship and pirate packs look and play richer than the original
  • Room Editor 2.0 and Workshop add endless community rooms

Cons

  • Some puzzles feel convoluted and hints rarely help
  • Controller support is poor, per several reviewers
  • Few base rooms, with more sold as DLC

About

From the Steam store page · View on Steam

Escape Simulator 2 is the sequel to the best-selling escape room game. With immersive new environments, deeper puzzles, and innovative builder tools, it’s the ultimate first person escape room experience.

Explore new locations crafted with the help of escape room experts and legendary community builders. Each room pack contains four rooms filled with intricate puzzles and hidden mysteries:

  • Dracula’s Castle: Step into the shadowy fortress, uncover its secrets, and free the town from a dark curse.

  • Starship EOS: An exploration vessel is stranded after a collision, forcing you to retrieve an energy source from a mysterious dark sphere.

  • The Cursed Treasure: Follow a cryptic map to a pirate island, overcome treacherous trials, and claim the ancient treasure.

With more content coming soon after the release!

The game is designed for both solo play and multiplayer with friends. Up to 8 players can join together online, with built-in voice and text chat for easy puzzle-solving communication.

When you step into Escape Simulator 2, we want it to feel like you’re walking into a real-life escape room. Every detail is designed for interactivity—you can pick up and examine objects, wipe away dirt, drive vehicles, take a seat wherever you like, and move anything that’s not bolted down.

Create your dream escape rooms with the updated Room Editor 2.0! After seeing over 4,000 rooms built in the first game, we’ve made the tools even more powerful and intuitive. The new lighting engine makes your rooms look more like the official rooms, the Building Editor lets you design rooms (with working stairs!), and you can bring everything to life with Sequence animations.

Why a sequel?

A sequel gives us a fresh start and lets us push the limits of the genre further. We were inspired to explore darker escape room themes and experiment with new gameplay and puzzle ideas. Splitting from the original game let us focus on improving key features like rendering, networking, physics, and animations.

Will Escape Simulator still get updates?

Yes! With the recent Mayan DLC and more content on the way, we’ll continue supporting the original game while expanding its reach to new platforms.

Is it scary?

While Escape Simulator 2 is darker and has a more mysterious vibe, it’s not a horror game. The game also doesn’t feature any jump scares or gore.

We’d love to hear your thoughts and ideas for Escape Simulator 2! We ❤️ our amazing community of escapers, puzzle solvers, and builders, so feel free to share your ideas on Discord or email us at: [email protected]!
