The Room 4: Old Sins is the fourth entry in Fireproof Games' puzzle-box series, rebuilt with sharper visuals for PC. An engineer and his wife have vanished, and the trail leads to an odd dollhouse in their attic. You zoom into its miniature rooms, each a puzzle box of hidden switches, sockets and strange contraptions, while a Lovecraftian story unfolds. It suits solo players who enjoy tactile, mechanical puzzles in a dark atmosphere.
Players love it: about 99 percent of over 9,000 English reviews are positive, and many call it the best in the series. Reviewers praise the dollhouse framing, which keeps the puzzle-box feel tight, the detailed objects and smooth flow between rooms. Most say the difficulty is balanced, with a subtle hint system that keeps frustration low, and several finished without help. Expect frequent back-and-forth between areas to remember where an empty slot was.
The main caveats are length and familiarity. Most players finish in four to seven hours, it is a little shorter than The Room 3 with no bonus content, and series veterans start to predict where the hidden switch will be. It is worth its price for anyone who likes the genre; newcomers can start here or with the first game.
Pros
- Dollhouse framing keeps the puzzle-box feel focused
- Richly detailed contraptions with satisfying mechanics
- Subtle hint system keeps frustration low
Cons
- Shorter than The Room 3, with no bonus chapter
- Series veterans learn to predict hidden switches
- Lots of back-and-forth between rooms
