Alchemist: Journey of the Soul is a first-person fantasy puzzle adventure in which you play a homunculus sent to gather ingredients for the Philosopher's Stone. You travel through castles and monasteries, brew potions that grant spells such as shrinking or fire, and use them to open the way forward. It can be played solo or online with up to four players.
The Steam reception is very positive, with about 85% of 130 reviews recommending it. Players enjoy the scenery and the variety of situations, and describe the puzzles as fun but mostly straightforward. Most finish in roughly two to five hours, slowed a little by the lack of a run button.
The co-op is the main point of criticism. Several reviewers say there is usually only one puzzle at a time, so in a group one person solves while the others watch. One player also lost a spell to a bug and could not progress. Buy it as a relaxed solo puzzle game, ideally on sale; skip it if you want a true co-op escape room.
Pros
- Potion brewing unlocks spells that double as puzzle tools
- Pretty castle and monastery settings to explore
- Gentle puzzles suit newcomers to the genre
Cons
- Co-op often leaves players watching one person solve
- Short, with forced walking padding the length
- A reported spell-loss bug can block progress
