The Experiment: Escape Room is a one-scenario escape game from OnSkull Games. A doctor drugs you and you wake up locked in the back of his practice, where he has been running tests on animals and people. It plays in VR or on desktop, solo, in co-op with up to six people, or as a Versus race where everyone is locked in alone.
Reception is mixed and leans negative, with about 46 percent of 127 Steam reviews positive. The one detailed review lists the common pain points: very dark lighting, clunky object handling, shelves and floors full of clutter with no easy way to sort items, a few obscure puzzles, and bugs where key items fall through tables and cannot be recovered.
It is also short, at around two hours. The multiplayer and VR options are its main appeal, and the creepy lab setting suits a group. Buy it only cheaply on sale for a group night, and expect some jank. Solo players will find more polished escape rooms elsewhere.
Pros
- Up to six players in co-op or competitive Versus mode
- Creepy medical lab premise
- Works in VR or with mouse, keyboard or gamepad
Cons
- Very dark scenes and clunky object handling
- Bug can drop key items through tables for good
- Short, around two hours
